Playing capoeira with the projection of the self in the background or circumscribing a duo with the atabaque instrument, the tall and tapered drum, seminal in Afro-Brazilian cultural traditions, are emblems of how much the solo of the choreographer and performer from Bahia intends to disrupt certainties about the desiring and politicized body regarding anti-racist demarcations.
Under a percussive base pulsating from end to end, Jaqueline Elesbão sets an analogy with the game and brings to the audience, especially to black citizens, the experience of imagining themselves in the play that underlies the dominant system that is there, exposing structural racism and denouncing sexism. The artist in the white leotards talks about broadening our viewpoint by disobeying this logic, contradicting the rhyme and taming the fears that, after all, are collective.
Present on the stage of Salvador since the late 1990s and going around in recent years with Entrelinhas, the artist radiates the black imagination and narratives, the construction with “the other” and with herself, “besides the understanding of our ancestry as an imperative bond to the place we choose to affect.”
